Saint Thomas: Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem

Arvo Pärt’s achingly beautiful Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten sets the scene in this introspective program of choral works that commemorate heroes and pray for peace. In John Rutter’s Visions, solo violin, boys choir, and strings paint a radiantly pastoral picture of heavenly harmony. Vaughan Williams’s lush Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus, based on the titular folk tune, provides an instrumental interlude before his 1936 cantata Dona Nobis Pacem, performed here in a version for chorus, strings, and piano. Written on the cusp of world war, Vaughan Williams’s haunting plea melds poetry by Walt Whitman, biblical verse, and political texts to make a musical case for laying down arms.
