SUMMARY:J.S. Bach's Complete Brandenburg Concerti
DESCRIPTION:A single performance of one of the Bach Brandenburg Concertos offers a glimpse into the composer’s ability to push the concerto form forward. Hearing the complete grouping of the six Brandenburgs together offers an understanding of just how substantial Bach’s innovations were. The Brandenburg Concertos were written after the composer met the Margrave of Brandenburg\, whose court was known for a substantial musical establishment. Bach reworked some previous materials into a group titled “Six Concerts for Several Instruments” and sent them off to the Margrave for consideration in 1721. Later dubbed the Brandenburg Concertos\, they do indeed employ several instruments\, in movements designed to showcase the characteristics of each\, in solos or as part of new pairings. The first includes a pair of horns\, instruments associated mostly with hunting calls\, in a solo group with three oboes\, bassoon and violin. No. 2\, provides a challenging turn for solo trumpet along with flute\, oboe\, and violin. The third is a string concerto for three trios of violin\, viola\, and cello. Two flutes and solo violin are highlighted in Concerto No. 4\, while No. 5 brings the harpsichord forward as a solo instrument\, one of the first occasions the instrument had stepped away from a continuo role. No. 6 excludes violins altogether to focus on the voices of lower strings. The Margrave’s reaction to this enthusiastic offering is unknown\, as there is no evidence that he responded to Bach’s submission or that the works were performed at his court.

SUMMARY:J.S. Bach and Mozart with Angela Hewitt
DESCRIPTION:Bach specialist Angela Hewitt is conductor and piano soloist in a program of works displaying the nimbleness and ingenuity of Bach\, and his successor\, Mozart\, in composing concertos and chamber works that pushed musical boundaries. Bach has been the backbone of Hewitt’s career. She was immersed in his music through her father\, a cathedral organist\, and recalls\, “I danced to Bach\, sang Bach\, played him on the violin and recorder . . . and in the end put all that experience into playing his music on the piano.” Her Hyperion recording of all the major keyboard works was hailed as “one of the record glories of our age” (The Sunday Times) and she recently completed the Bach Odyssey\, performing them in concerts worldwide. Hewitt leads from the keyboard in the D-minor and G-minor concertos.  \nBach’s astonishing compositional output found him often reworking pieces for different occasions and instrumentations. Such is the case with his keyboard concertos\, which are all transcriptions of works for other solo instruments\, adapted for harpsichord in Bach’s time. The Concerto in D minor is believed to have been transcribed from a lost work for another instrument. His Concerto in G is a transcription of his own Violin Concerto in A minor.    \nMozart was also a restless composer whose prolific output can be seen in works created in just a few months of 1784. His notebooks document the premiere of his Quintet for Piano and Winds\, K.452 just two days after its composition in March. The Concerto No. 17 came a month later\, and Mozart also recorded the oft-repeated story that its last movement variations were inspired by a pet starling he had just purchased\, which could whistle its main theme\, while adding some variations.

SUMMARY:J.S. Bach's Stabat Mater
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 OSL Bach Festival opens with an evening of Baroque brilliance as Lionel Meunier\, founder of Vox Luminis\, conducts a program of sacred works. Bach’s Tilge\, Höchster\, meine Sünden—his profound reimagining of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater—is paired with Vivaldi’s luminous motets. Richly scored and emotionally vivid\, the orchestral writing highlights the depth and elegance of the Baroque tradition. \nSoprano Gemma Nha\, praised for her “focused and luminous sound” (Parterre)\, joins countertenor Reginald Mobley\, described as “one of the finest countertenors working today” (Chicago Reader). \n\n

SUMMARY:Bach and Sons
DESCRIPTION:Bringing this year’s Bach Festival to a close\, Kristian Bezuidenhout makes his Orchestra of St. Luke’s debut as both conductor and fortepiano soloist in a program that outlines the metamorphosis of musical styles from the late Baroque into the Classical era. \nWe begin with the Symphony in G minor by Johann Christian Bach\, a composer who paved the way for Classical musical forms and significantly influenced the young Mozart. While his utilization of simple harmonies might imply a subdued character in his work\, this turbulent symphony defies expectations\, brimming with colors that orchestras had yet to explore. \nIn direct contrast to this melody-driven style\, the Contrapunctus XIV from J.S. Bach’s “The Art of Fugue” showcases the senior composer’s famously intricate counterpoint and complex fugue subjects. Written during the last decade of Bach’s life and therefore within thirty years of the previous piece on the program\, it presents a remarkable juxtaposition\, offering a distinct glimpse into the musical evolution between father and son.  \nC.P.E. Bach\, the second son of J.S. Bach\, occupies a stylistic realm that defies easy classification\, with a creative voice that is uniquely his own. Recognized as a vital bridge between two musical eras\, he played a pivotal role in shaping the evolution from the ornate and structured Baroque period to the clarity and balance of the emerging Classical era. His keyboard compositions bear witness to his innovative spirit\, marked by inventive ornamentation\, phrasing\, and dynamic nuances that empower performers with interpretative latitude. This artistry is brilliantly harnessed by Bezuidenhout\, particularly evident in his rendition of the Piano Concerto in D minor.  \nConcluding the program is Mozart\, in many respects a spiritual heir to the Bach lineage. The Piano Concerto No. 9\, known as “Jenamy” after the young woman to whom it was dedicated\, was composed when Mozart was a mere 21 years old. With a bright and joyful air\, the concerto is replete with the signature elegance emblematic of the now firmly established Classical era.  \nPrincipal artistic underwriting for the OSL Bach Festival has been provided by Phyllis Rosenthal\, in memory of Charles M. Rosenthal.

SUMMARY:Concertos with Hadelich
DESCRIPTION:Hear violin virtuoso Augustin Hadelich breathe new life into works that showcase Bach’s commitment to sustainability—namely\, reusing and recycling. \nLike many of his 18th-century contemporaries\, Bach had no qualms about repurposing his own music. He seamlessly integrated movements from small cantatas into grand choral pieces\, refashioned movements from old concertos\, and freely exchanged entire compositions between instruments\, a practice illuminated in tonight’s pieces. This intriguing insight offers a window into the compositions that must have held a special place in Bach’s heart.  \nWhen performing Bach’s music today\, repurposing becomes a necessity due to the loss of many of his physical works. Both pieces on tonight’s program have been meticulously reconstructed from harpsichord concertos that were originally written for violin. First\, the Violin Concerto in D minor emerges as a mesmerizing soloist’s showcase. Hadelich masterfully navigates intricate textures\, leading us through the fervent Allegro\, contemplative Adagio\, and spirited final Allegro. Next\, the Violin Concerto in G minor\, comes alive in a rich dialogue between Hadelich’s eloquent violin and the orchestra. Though these renditions are modern reworkings\, they faithfully align with historical practices and underscore the enduring magic of their sources.  \nPrincipal artistic underwriting for the OSL Bach Festival has been provided by Phyllis Rosenthal\, in memory of Charles M. Rosenthal.

SUMMARY:A Narrated Musical Offering
DESCRIPTION:OSL’s Bach Festival 2022 culminates with Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie’s leadership of Bach’s A Musical Offering. Dating from the composer’s final decade\, the work is complex and highly chromatic\, exhaustively exploring the contrapuntal possibilities of a single theme. Labadie contextualizes the performance with his characteristically informative and illuminating commentary\, offering deeper insight into one of Bach’s last and greatest instrumental works.
