SUMMARY:Paul McCreesh Conducts Bach and Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Paul McCreesh launches OSL’s annual Bach Festival alongside GRAMMY-nominated countertenor Reginald Mobley. \nRenowned for his insightful\, historically informed interpretations—especially in early music—McCreesh brings his expertise to Bach’s Sinfonia from cantata BWV 42\, a luminous instrumental prelude to a work centered on Christ’s post-Resurrection appearances. Unlike the grand choral openings typical of many of Bach’s cantatas\, this sinfonia unfolds as a richly textured instrumental movement\, commonly thought to be adapted from a lost concerto. Its dialogue between strings and winds creates a uniquely warm gentle tone\, setting the stage for the cantata’s message of faith and reassurance. \nBach’s cantatas\, the cornerstone of his sacred output\, balance intricate counterpoint with expressive depth. Mobley\, returning to OSL\, lends his exceptional artistry to a solo cantata\, illuminating the composer’s unmatched ability to intertwine text and melody with profound emotional impact. \nThe program also turns to Mozart’s Symphony No. 25 in G Minor\, a work of stormy intensity composed at just 17 years of age. Embracing the restless energy of the pre-Romantic Sturm und Drang movement\, it surges with syncopations\, sudden dynamic shifts\, and dramatic urgency. Its famous opening theme (later immortalized in the movie Amadeus) stands in striking contrast to Bach’s poised elegance\, offering a powerful juxtaposition of two composers who transformed their respective eras.

SUMMARY:Renaud Capuçon\, Bach\, and Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Hear violinist Renaud Capuçon make his OSL debut as both soloist and conductor in a program of vibrant and expressive works by Bach and Mozart. \nCapuçon brings his artistry to two pieces Mozart composed for Salzburg court violinist Antonio Brunetti—the Adagio\, K. 261\, and the Rondo\, K. 373. Although he was the Archbishop’s preferred violinist\, Mozart was not fond of Brunetti\, finding him crude and unrefined. When Brunetti complained that one of Mozart’s concerto movements was too serious\, Mozart begrudgingly wrote the Adagio as a substitute. A few years later\, the effortlessly charming Rondo was composed for a court soirée in Vienna. The program also features Mozart’s Symphony No. 29\, a work of youthful brilliance. Composed when he was just 18\, it marks a turning point in Mozart’s symphonic writing\, moving beyond the polish of his earlier works toward greater expressive depth. \nBach’s Violin Concerto in A Minor is one of his most enduring works\, admired since the 18th century. The orchestra’s assertive opening theme never appears in the soloist’s episodes\, making the violin’s entrance feel all the more striking. The middle Andante is intimate and tender\, while the finale thrillingly fuses gigue rhythms with fugal interplay. The evening also includes the opening of Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2\, written in the stately style of the French overture.

SUMMARY:Jean Rondeau and The Bach Dynasty
DESCRIPTION:Harpsichordist Jean Rondeau returns to lead OSL in the finale of this year’s Bach Festival with a program tracing the evolution of the Bach dynasty’s music across the 18th century. \nThe evening begins with Johann Christian Bach’s Concerto in F Minor\, an exciting work from the youngest son of J.S. Bach. J.C. embraced the lighter\, more melodic style of the Classical era\, a departure from his father’s intricate counterpoint. This lesser-known concerto brims with drama\, shifting from a stormy opening to a more intimate middle movement before closing with a rapid-fire finale. \nCarl Philipp Emanuel Bach\, whose music was prized for its unpredictability and expressive freedom\, is represented by his Concerto in D Minor\, a work steeped in the newly emerging Empfindsamer Stil (“sensitive style”). Emphasizing sudden contrasts\, restless harmonies\, and deeply personal expression\, it reflects his bold departure from Baroque formality. Rondeau also performs his transcription of C.P.E.’s Andante con tenerezza\, a movement of introspective journeying. \nThe program concludes with J.S. Bach’s Concerto in D Minor. Likely adapted from an earlier violin concerto\, it is filled with fierce virtuosity\, jagged rhythms\, and striking harmonic clashes. It’s Bach at his most dramatic and unrelenting\, and a thrilling finale to this exploration of a legendary musical lineage.
