Carlos Izcaray

Now in his eleventh season as Music Director of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Carlos Izcaray is recognised internationally for his dynamic artistry and leadership. He has conducted major ensembles across the US and internationally, including the St. Louis, Pacific, North Carolina, and San Antonio symphonies, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Malmö Symfoniorkester, Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, and Orchester der Komischen Oper Berlin.

Equally at home in opera and ballet, Izcaray has led productions for the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Wexford Festival Opera, and the New York City Ballet, where he made his Lincoln Center debut in 2024. As a recording artist, his albums with Orchid Classics, featuring music by Max Richter and Kris Bowers, have earned widespread acclaim and consistently high rankings on Classical Music streaming charts. He also appears as conductor in the Apple TV+ film Philharmonic Fantastique.

A committed composer, Izcaray has written works for leading orchestras and soloists, with recent premieres at the Philharmonie de Paris, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and across the US. Deeply passionate about music education, he has worked with institutions including El Sistema, Fundación Batuta, World Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the American Youth Symphony, where he served as Music Director from 2016 to 2024.
