Praised for his “hearty baritone” voice, Bermudian American Jonathan Christopher is swiftly establishing himself as a versatile vocalist and actor in New York and around the world. His recent engagement in Atlanta Opera’s RENT was acclaimed – “[Jonathan’s] poignant account of ‘I’ll Cover You’ was heartbreaking, one of this production’s transcendent moments” (ArtsATL). Jonathan is honored to carry the torch of Jud after Shuler Hensley’s consummate interpretation.
In New York, Jonathan has performed in critically acclaimed productions on Broadway (Sweeney Todd with Josh Groban), Off Broadway (Heather Christian’s Oratorio for Living Things and Dave Malloy’s Octet), and at Lincoln Center (A Little Night Music in Concert with Cynthia Erivo; The Black Clown). He has played Aaron Burr and George Washington throughout the US and Canada on tour with Hamilton. Regionally, he has worked with Atlanta’s City Springs Theatre Company in Ragtime (“Jonathan… stole the show. He played Coalhouse with his whole heart…” (BroadwayWorld), Pittsburgh’s Civic Light Opera in the world premiere musical Madame Clicquot, as well as engagements with Eugene Opera, Syracuse Opera, Detroit Opera Theater, Knoxville’s Clarence Brown Theater, and Milwaukee’s Skylight Music Theater. The musical Rent brought Jonathan to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Aruba National Theatre, and Atlanta Opera.
In concert, Jonathan has sung with the Cincinnati, Hilton Head, and Asheville Symphonies, Naples Philharmonic, and Toronto’s Amplified Opera (“strong [and] extremely well sung” – Opera Canada). He’s sung gospel in Italy, arias in Germany, and most excitedly sang with Celine Dion on the Today Show. In 2021, he opened the 46th annual Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts and was awarded the esteemed Johnny Mercer Award at the 2021 American Traditions Vocal Competition. Jonathan holds The Bermudian Magazine’s 2020 Best of Bermuda Award alongside his brother Nicholas. With degrees in voice and opera from the University of Michigan and McGill University, Jonathan hopes to continue using music to connect and bring people together. Extended gratitude to family in Bermuda and Boston, the OSL family, Wolf Talent, Jeff Berger, and Vicki Smith. Jonathan’s EP Shine is available on all streaming platforms. IG: @geezjawn
