The Legacy of Florence Price

Welcome to OSL’s Fall 2020 Free School Concert—for online audiences! This six-part series of interactive performances is designed for K-12 students to explore the music and life of trailblazing composer, Florence B. Price (1887–1953). OSL musicians, joined by actor and playwright Kirya Traber (playing the role of Price) will invite you to make music together, learn about Price’s history, and listen to some amazing string quartets and art songs. With special guests: vocalist Jasmine Muhammad and drummer and folklorist Súle Greg Wilson.

You’ll sing along with Jasmine Muhammad and hear how Price reinvents a traditional Spiritual to make it her own.

Learn how Price helped evolve classical music by composing with rhythms inspired by the African-American Juba tradition. Make music together with special guest Súle Greg Wilson and St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble!

Legendary singer Marian Anderson performed Price’s music at her iconic 1939 performance at the Lincoln Memorial. Through Price’s collaborations, important steps were taken toward racial equality.
