It’s music fit for royalty in OSL’s October Chamber Series opening concert! Pianist Jeremy Denk joins OSL musicians to perform JS Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No. 5 in F Major and the “the crown of Brahms’ chamber music” his Piano Quintet. The lifecycle of Brahm’s Piano Quintet underwent many drastic changes of instrumentation before the composer settled on the version performed on this program. Originally scored for string quintet, it was at the encouragement of violinist Joseph Joaquim and composer/pianist Clara Schumann that Brahms reimagined the instrumentation, first as a sonata for two pianos and then finally as the Piano Quintet. With it’s adventurous outer movements and Schubertian influence in the Scherzo third movement, this transcendent piece has aptly earned the reputation as “the crown of Brahms’ chamber music.”
